Music

January 21st, 2007

It may only be when my mind races anxiously that I my mind calls back the memory of music which really consumes me. I have absolutely no idea what made me think of it the other day but I was sitting around with Mariel and it struck me that I never listen to any classical music any more.

And then it struck me that I’ve never listened to some of my most favorite music ‘with’ my wife and see how she likes it. I did go through an opera phase were I wanted to play some stuff for her. But that was short lived (she wasn’t a fan… she would listen but I think that as soon as any piece would finish that she wanted to rock out to the Led Zep to balance her out or something).

Let me just say that most classical music is just tripe ass run-off… the stuff that really gets me is when a few instruments dance with each (or alone) and mix in multiple voices of a melody into one sound.

I started trying to ‘recall’ and hum one of my favorites, Bach’s parita no. 2 – the violin chaconne (or ciaconne I think?). I downloaded a performance and it sounded good but I think that it may have been two violins… the sound was too polished and uniform. There is slight delay when one person has to play the multiple voices of a melody that I think makes all the difference in the world. Like watching a robot walk – it may get all the movements right but it’s the imperfections that make walking look natural.

Any way… it turns out there is a performance that I found on youtube by a 70 year old Jascha Heifetz – I have no idea who that is but it seems that if I knew anything about classical violin performances I WOULD know who that was :)

The second part (which I assume was split up just to avoid bigger video on youtube) is really awe inspiring. Let’s say that I was granted a wish and was giving instant technical prowess to tackle this piece I would pass out from the physical strain after the first 2 minutes. There’s no way I’d make it to minute 13.

Daily Kos: The True Face Of This Administration Fully Revealed
Mr. Bush’s National Security Adviser, Stephen J. Hadley, said in an interview on “Meet the Press” on NBC that the White House has sufficient money under its control to deploy the troops as planned, and he suggested that once the troops are in place, Congress would be reluctant to cut off funding.

“I think once they get in harm’s way, Congress’s tradition is to support those troops,” Mr. Hadley said.

A New Sith, or Revenge of the Hope

This is a neat little re-write up of the star wars story. I found this while looking up some stuff about Lego Star Wars II – cool game.

Me and Dex are right now watching ‘A New Hope’ – he’s digging it. Kids are cool.

Middle-aged Long Island lady thumbing through magazine: Look, there’s Stephen Colbert.
Husband: Who’s that?
Middle-aged Long Island lady: He’s a terrific Republican reporter on TV. You should watch him. He’s really great. Puts the liberals in their place.
